Emotional Boundaries, Empathy & Energetic Overload
Some people feel the emotions of others as if they were their own. A shift in someone’s tone, an unspoken tension in the room, a subtle change in atmosphere or a look that carries disappointment can land in your system instantly and with force. You may find yourself absorbing emotional information without meaning to, taking responsibility for feelings that do not belong to you, or losing clarity about where you end and someone else begins. This kind of sensitivity is often innate, intuitive and finely tuned, but without support, it can become overwhelming.
Energetic overload happens when the emotional world around you enters your system more quickly than you can process it. It can feel like being swept up in a current that is not yours, or like carrying a weight you cannot name. Many sensitive or intuitive people describe this experience as being porous or open, the way seaweed fronds move with every small change in water movement. What begins as empathy can turn into exhaustion, confusion or emotional saturation.
In our work together, we explore how your system takes in emotional information and where your boundaries naturally thin. We look at the beliefs that make it difficult to say no, the patterns that lead you to take on too much, and the moments when your emotional clarity blurs into someone else’s story. We also explore the subtle emotional and intuitive cues you pick up on, helping you distinguish insight from absorption, sensing from carrying, empathy from entanglement.
I support this work through Transactional Analysis, Gestalt, CBT, NLP, emotional mapping, intuitive tuning-in, shadow exploration and mindful relational awareness. These approaches help you identify the dynamics that drain your energy or overwhelm your emotional landscape. We also work with the energetic layer of boundaries - the quiet inner signals that tell you when you are taking in too much or when you are disconnecting to cope. Constitutional homeopathy and other wonderful natural tools that I use, can provide additional support, helping you strengthen your internal centre and navigate emotional environments with more ease.
This process is not about becoming harder or less empathic. It is about learning how to stay open without losing yourself. Over time, you begin to recognise when you are absorbing emotions that are not yours, how to stay rooted in your own energetic space, and how to let emotional information move through you rather than settle inside you. You develop a clearer sense of your own emotional shape, even in the presence of strong feelings from others.
Empathy is a gift, not a burden. The work lies in learning how to carry it without carrying everyone else. Here, you can learn how to stay connected while still belonging fully to yourself.
