Family Therapy for Teens with Addiction, Depression & Complex Mental Health
When a teenager is struggling with addiction, depression, emotional volatility or complex mental health, the entire family feels it. Parents oscillate between fear and helplessness, siblings withdraw or react, communication breaks down, and the home becomes a landscape shaped by crisis, exhaustion and uncertainty. No one is prepared for how destabilising this can be - or how isolating.
In this work, I bring a grounded, compassionate presence to help families make sense of what is happening beneath the surface. Addiction, self-destructive behaviour or emotional collapse never arise in isolation; they are expressions of deeper pain, unmet needs, biochemical imbalance, trauma, inherited patterns and a nervous system struggling to cope. I help families understand these layers so they can respond with clarity instead of panic.
Together, we explore the dynamics that have developed around the young person: rescue cycles, fear-driven reactions, silence, conflict, guilt, distancing, or over-protection. We look gently at the impact of stress, overwhelm, communication ruptures and the unspoken grief held by every member of the family. This is not about blame - it is about illumination, healing and creating new ways of relating.
I guide families towards steadier boundaries, healthier connection and more resilient patterns of interaction. We work on rebuilding trust, supporting recovery, reducing crisis activation, and helping parents hold their authority in a loving, grounded way. Teenagers in distress need a system that can remain calm, cohesive and emotionally available - without collapsing or tightening in fear.
This work is tender, honest and deeply human. It helps families move from crisis to coherence, from reactivity to understanding, from despair to possibility. And it supports the young person in finding their way back to themselves, held by a system that is finally able to support them.
